TOO MANY TV CAMERAS IN UK
London (UK) - The UK's Privacy Commissioner Richard Thomas denounced the situation of the British society. The number of TV cameras has exceeded the threshold of simple security measures and this is now threatening citizens' privacy.
On the occasion of the 28th International Data Protection and Privacy Commissioners Conference held in London in November 2-3, a report described British citizens as the most monitored people in the industrialized West in the same way as Russia, China, Malaysia and Singapore. Moreover, Institutions are accused not to be able to guarantee data protection due to unreliable databases. By making pessimistic predictions worthy of George Orwell's "1984", the report stresses that in 2006 the State has spent 500 million pounds for close circuit TV cameras. More than 4 million cameras have been installed, i.e. one every 14 people. A normal British citizen seems to be monitored on average 300 times per day.
