Berlin (DE). According the German newspaper Suddeutsche Zeitung German policemen could be able shortly to gain remote control over computers belonging to suspects or people under investigation. The project is intended for police forces to access hard disks and technological systems in Internet, of course upon magistrate permit. According to the federal Minister of Home Affairs Wolfgang Schauble this project is a new important instrument against terrorism. However, the most experienced technicians are still sceptical. Gaining access to protected personal computers might be difficult and require specific attack instruments, i.e. a prerogative of IT crime. Germany will probably follow the US example, where in 2001 the FBI launched the project called the “Magic Lantern” right to gain access to suspected computers as well as to tap internet communications, e.g. Over IP telephony communications.
