BOOSTING BIOMETRICS
Singapore (SG). On the occasion of the last Secure IT Conference held in Singapore last October 20-21, 2006 the President of the Biometrics Institute Ted Dunstone stated that many goals of biometric technology seem to be now less “exotic”, although there are still plenty of barriers and obstacles to overcome. According to Ted Dunstone biometrics is a completely different identification method in comparison with others because it is a science based on probability. In fact, there is not always full and perfect correspondence because that would be symptom of vulnerability. In a “non-probabilistic” security system responsibility is associated to the individual, who can for instance forget the password or not keep it secret. On the contrary, in a “probabilistic” security system responsibility is assumed by the organization and not by individuals. Organizations thus have to test their own identification systems. Moreover, implementation of such systems should involve users by training them and providing them with the answers needed. Users should be provided also with all necessary information about biometrics, so that they themselves will be willing to employ this technology.
