BRITISH RAILWAYS: ONE MILLION AND HALF POUNDS TO SECURITY
Liverpool (UK). Northern Rail, the company controlling almost the whole railway system in northern Britain, has recently announced investments amounting to about one million and half pounds for passengers security. Part of the sum will be allocated to the creation of a mobile team for emergencies, in particular accidents along this broad rail network. The new “security guards” will be moving with special vehicles and will make reference to the nearest Northern Rail control centres which will be connected directly to train drivers. Emergency vehicles will be equipped with CCTV devices too. Such initiative should be seen as an answer to the serious accidents occurred in the last months in Merseyside and Cheshire as well as an answer to the serious vandalistic actions recently experienced. The whole operation is run in coordination with the British Transport Police. The Security & Emergency Planning Manager of Northern Rail Mr. Martyn Guiver states that passengers and staff security is a priority. The security team – by patrolling streets and stations – will act also as visual deterrent against antisocial behaviours.
