TOWARDS THE NEW EUROPEAN SYSTEM FOR AIR TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT
Brussels (Belgium). The Transports Commission of the European Parliament has recently approved the regulation proposal about the establishment of a common business for the European new generation system of air traffic management. The project called Sesar (http://www.eurocontrol.int/sesar) aims at creating one single control system for European air traffic. Such system includes both new technological solutions and new organizational methods. The European Parliament has launched the Sesar project together with Eurocontrol (European Organization for Safety of Air Navigation) and first with the financial support of the private sector.
Sesar will be developing in three phases: the first in now in progress and is expected to end in December 2007. Measures, priorities and implementation plans have to be defined. The second phase will be effective from January 2008 and December 2013, whereas the last phase of testing and implementation will be protracted to December 2020.
According to Sesar’s promoters, control system reorganization and unification at the European level is extremely necessary because air traffic is expected to increase from now to 2025 and security-related issues are pressing
